One of my favorite things about photographing a large family, is that there is always something happening.
Someone is wandering off. Someone needs to be held. Someone is investigating the dirt. Someone has decided they are absolutely finished with whatever we were doing five seconds ago.
Thesemoments hold so much of the good stuff.
This family of eight met me at Murrell Park in Flower Mound for an evening that was less about getting five children to cooperate for a camera and much more about giving everyone enough space to just be together.

Murrell Park is one of my favorite locations for family photos because it gives kids somewhere to go. There are grassy trails to wander, open spaces to explore, rocks along the shoreline, and Grapevine Lake stretching out behind it all.
For families with several little ones especially, that freedom matters.
Rather than expecting every child to stand in the right spot and look at me at the same time, we can move. We can let someone trail behind, scoop up the baby, regroup, wander toward the water, and see what unfolds along the way.
Sometimes everyone is together.
Sometimes everyone is doing something completely different.
Both are worth remembering.
Family Photography That Leaves Room for Real Life
Of course we’ll make the photograph where everybody is together. But I’m equally interested in what happens around it.
A baby riding on his brother’s shoulders. A child reaching toward a sibling. Mom and Dad in the middle of five different things happening at once. Little people scattered across the frame exactly as they so often are in real life.
Those photographs may not be the most traditional ones from a family session, but years from now, I think they’re often the ones that bring you right back.
Because this is what this season looked like.
Busy. Tender. A little chaotic. Full.
And fleeting.

Murrell Park sits along Grapevine Lake in Flower Mound, Texas, and evening sessions here give us beautiful golden light along with plenty of variety in one location. We can move from grassy areas and trails down toward the shoreline as the light changes, which keeps the session moving naturally for kids.
You don’t need children who will sit still for an hour. You don’t need everyone to be in a perfect mood. And you definitely don’t need to spend your session worrying about whether your kids are “behaving” for me.
Come ready to love on them, play with them, scoop them up when they need you, and let me worry about the photographs.
